I do not know too many people capable of making something really positive out of a difficult time in their life, and I have to say that people capable of such a thing have my complete admiration and that is exactly what I feel for Theresa Wing Hines, the Owner and designer of One Pearl.
One Pearl’s Designs are not only beautiful and elegant, but they are out of the ordinary. The One pearl concept is to have one pearl of a different color that stands out and makes it so unique and absolutely stunning.
That different color Pearl represents Theresa’s son who was her inspiration to create this amazingly beautiful jewelry line. Theresa has been able to make something as classic as pearls and enhance their beauty even more by giving them her own touch.
The One Pearl’s designs are unlike anything I have seen before; all the pieces in her collection are so beautifully made that each one of them is a little piece of art.
But my admiration for Theresa is not only because of her creativity and her capability of create beautiful pieces of jewelry, but because she made something beautiful from a really hard time in her life when she had to be separated from her son in order to get him the help he needed. She came out of that dark time in her life and made it as bright as possible!
For those of you wondering what that experience was , here is Theresa’s own explanation about that time in her life:
“Over the course of years, I had been dealing with many issues concerning one of my sons, to no avail. Eventually, feeling left with no other recourse, he was sent to a wilderness therapy camp and from there to a therapeutic boarding school. In rereading that sentence, I chuckle at how simple those words sound. There is/was nothing simple about that time at all. It was one of the most, if not the most, crushing experiences of my life to date.
To have your child taken, to see him for only 11 days of his entire 16th year, to wonder how he was; when would he come home to live again; what he was thinking; how much did he hate me; would he ever forgive me; would he ever understand … why he had to go; was he warm and dry; was he homesick; did he feel utterly alone and abandoned; to continually question every decision pertaining to him made over the years; to feel so helpless, at a loss of what to do, how to act, what to say to people who asked about him, fighting tears every time his name was mentioned … all these thoughts and so many more raced through my head constantly, making life so very hard to bear. For months after he left, I could not leave my home, so tortured was I with grief over his departure and literally sick with worry. These thoughts and more roiled through my head, over and over and over. Finally one day, something snapped. I had another son at home, who needed me. I had to get up and start living again, or at least try to pretend to live again, for his sake as well as my own.”
Theresa Wing Hines founded One Pearl as a way of combining her jewelry design talents with a desire to help children in need. She chooses non-profit organizations whose work she believes in, and donates 100% of profits to these organizations. One Pearl itself is not a non-profit; instead, it is a self-sustaining jewelry business that has chosen to invest all profits in children everywhere.
The primary recipients of One Pearl funding are Cambodian Living Arts, Saving Teens in Crisis Collaborative, and the Watkinson School's Global Studies Program. They also donate on a smaller scale to numerous benefits and charity auctions.
Anything you buy from One Pearl is not just a gift to you or your "one", but will also have a meaningful impact on someone else's life.
Whether you spend $50 or $500, your purchase will go a long way to help out a child somewhere.
I’ve got a necklace and bracelet set for the ladybug and all I can say is that the pieces are just stunning. The set came in a beautiful silk pouch and later on I found out that the pouches are actually part of Theresa and One Pearl's philanthropy work. But these aren’t made from just any silk:
All One Pearl silk ties and jewelry bags are made by a Cambodian women’s foundation that empowers the people it is dedicated to serving. Training women in the ancient Cambodian tradition of silk weaving provides them the opportunity to learn tangible skills. Women are trained at one of three training centers. After completing their training, the women’s products are purchased by the foundation for future sale.
The foundation is reviving the ancient tradition of silk weaving and simultaneously creating job opportunities for women in Cambodia. All of the proceeds from the sale of the exquisite handmade silk products fund social initiatives.
Theresa has kindly offered one lucky Born 2 Impress reader one necklace and bracelet children set.
