This allergy season has been reported as the worst in many years and as I have mentioned a few times before, DH suffers from really bad allergies. So we need to be as “ prepared “ as possible against agents that can possibly trigger his allergies, which as I have also mentioned in past occasions usually happens at night time.

With increased number of Americans with allergies or asthma, especially children, airborne contaminants that can trigger symptoms can be a particular concern. One out of four Americans has allergies or asthma, according to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America. But anyone may feel negative effects from poor indoor air quality.
Recently I was offered the chance to review one of Oreck’s newest products, the Oreck ProShield Air Purifier. To reduce indoor pollution and help people breathe easier in the home, the new advanced Oreck ProShield Air Purifier captures and destroys contaminants, including dust, pollen, bacteria, viruses, mold spores, fungi, pet dander, cigarette smoke and odors in the home.
The Oreck air purifier combines several advanced technologies for effective, fast air purification including a new UV technology for protection against viruses and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and a six-stage purification system that destroys particles as minute as 0.1 microns or one thousandth the size of a human hair.
When I first opened the box, I noticed a plasticizer smell, after a few hours of running the unit in its high setting the smell lessened noticeably and after a few days I could hardly smell it anymore, it smells a little bit like chlorine and it actually gives the room a clean smell that I really like.
The Oreck ProShield unit should be used only on a hard surface. The instructions say to place it on a table or desk, and it should be placed where it will not be drawing dirty air across your face while you are sleeping. So we have it on a small table in our room. One thing I noticed is that when the unit is running on the higher setting the air coming out is cold, so it makes the room temperature feel cooler. Air exits from the vent on the right side of the unit (as you face it) when it is used in the vertical position or from the top when used in the horizontal position.
There are three different possible speed settings. The high setting provides the maximum cleaning, the medium setting is for normal use and the low setting which is called Whisper quiet is the quietest setting. The high setting sounds a lot like a vacuum cleaner and would be too load to go to sleep, but is great to start the air cleaning process. What I usually do is start off with the high setting and then switch to the medium setting which you still can hear, but not quite as loud and the low setting which is really nice and provides a white noise kind of sound (perfect for sleeping) ……You can hardly hear it.
One feature I love about this unit is how compact and easy to operate it is and the slim design is really sleek and makes a nice asset to our décor.
