As you all know, I am currently in Ohio spending some time with my husband’s family and visiting a few different places up north……All DH’s family from Florida also came as one of their cousins was getting married and we all wanted to be present at the wedding. We are spending a few more days up here and when asked about places to go all the knowledgeable folks in the area came to the conclusion that Cedar Point was a MUST.
I had never heard of Cedar Point before, so I quickly did a search to find out about it, and this is what I learned: Cedar Point is a 364-acre amusement park located on a Lake Erie peninsula in Sandusky, Ohio, United States. Opened in 1870, it is the second oldest operating amusement park in the United States behind Lake Compounce. The park is owned and operated by Cedar Fair Entertainment Company and features a world record 74 rides, including 16 roller coasters.
Known as "America's Roller Coast", Cedar Point is currently tied with Canada's Wonderland for the second most number of roller coasters in a park. Cedar Point's normal operating season runs from mid-Mayday until Labor Day when the park is open daily. The park is then only open on weekends until the end of October for HalloWeekends, a Halloween event. (Information from Wikipidia).
In September 2011, Cedar Point was named as the Best Amusement Park in the World for the 14th consecutive year in the prestigious Golden Ticket Awards, presented by Amusement Today, an international industry publication. Cedar Point gave me four tickets to their park allowing our whole family could enjoy what they have to offer …..I must say that when the extended family started making plans for the park visit and said they were planning to stay there until the park closes at 10:00 I told my husband that we needed to drive our own car there because I was positive I could not stay there so late…Reality is that we got there about 12:00 noon and to my surprise I was leaving the park at exactly 10:00 at night!
With so much to see and do it is very easy to lose track of time….It is easy to do when you are having fun. There were 18 people in our group with the youngest member being just 4 years old and the oldest one 60 years old and we ALL had a great time and plenty of rides and activities to keep all family members entertained.
There is a huge picnic area that a lot of people use to bring coolers with food and drinks. You are not allowed to bring food in the park, but there are plenty of good food (including one of my favorites … Chic Fillet) and drinks sold in the park. The reality is that if you do bring your cooler (as some of my family did), you will still end up buying food and drinks in the park…..After you are in there and having fun on the rides, the last thing you really want to do is walk all the way out to get a snack! If you do walk out of the park make sure you get a stamp so you can re-enter the park with no problem.
I Must say that them allowing you to bring your own coolers and leaving them on the picnic benches is a very nice option for families that want to enjoy the park, but also are trying to save some money by bringing their own lunch. The ticket prices vary….There are some group discounts you can get and they also offer different Season passes that start at 109.99 and can be paid in three different payments……Some of these passes even include the parking fee. The daily passes start at 44.99 (you save about 7.00 if you but your tickets on line).
The park is equipped with so many different rides that the most difficult part of the day was to decide which attraction to go on next. The kids were in seventh heaven, but then again the older members of our group had as much fun as the little ones. Most of the rides are for kids that are 48” or taller, but you do find a few rides for the smaller kids. Some of the rides will also allow the kids on if they are accompanied by an adult.
The park has a great affinity for Snoopy and friends. There are several sections of the park that feature Snoopy and his friends and a section of the park made specifically for kids called Camp Snoopy (Yes, we had a hard time getting my daughter out of this section). So there is definitely something for everyone. Inside the park you will find that the “drink stands” and restaurants offer you the option of purchasing refillable cups.
Each time you refill you will pay a fraction of the original price which comes in handy when you are spending 10 hours in the park and staying hydrated in a must. Our group was divided in smaller groups so everyone could have a chance to get on their favorite rides…..I must say that the park is really popular in the area (as well as roller-coaster aficionados around the world) and there were lots of visitors from out of state, plenty of locals, and yes many internationals, so the earlier you get to the park, the better chance you have to get on the rides without waiting too long in line.
The park also offers an optional express line ticket that will allow you to get on the rides without the long line waits. The express ticket has an extra fee and you can get it right at the park if you decide to do so (there is a limited number of express bracelet bands that are sold each day, so if you want one, get it early).
There are flowers, and green areas all over the park that this beautifully decorated with little gardens here and there and you will also find a small petting zoo. There is no real dress code as you will find people walking around in their bathing suits, shorts, and jeans, but I would highly recommend wearing comfortable shoes as there is a lot of walking involved in a park this large.
The bathrooms were very clean and scattered around the park so you have easy access to them. Cedar point has also live entertainment and we were able to watch a really nice small musical by the park staff called Summer Daze which is NEW in 2012 and you can see the show May 26th - August 19th. One of my favorite attractions was actually an extreme sports show called All Wheels Extreme…by far the best show of its kind I have ever experienced…The show features really talented bikers and gymnasts from all over the country doing flips, diving and performing breath taking stunts that defy gravity (a few were X games participants with even a gold medalist in the show)… The show is live May 26 - August 19 and if you are visiting the park you DO NOT want to miss it. The show is on Sunday - Friday: 3:00, 5:00 and 7:00 and Saturdays: 1:00, 3:00, 5:00 and 7:00. Keep in mind that there are NO SHOWS ON TUESDAYs.
At the end of the day the park holds their Luminosity lights and dancing show that takes place when the sun sets after a great day at Cedar Point. Guests will be able to experience a show that I have to say exceeded all my expectations; Luminosity, Powered by Pepsi transforms the atmosphere of the park midways with lasers, lights, pyrotechnics, music and dancing…A lot of music and dancing!
The complete show is amazing starting with some of the costumes that I must add looked like something from a movie set. Great entertainment for all family members! I could have not expected more out of my park visit and will include some of the many, many pictures we took at the park on this post. If you are planning a visit up north, Cedar Point is one place you cannot afford to miss!
